Summary
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an extremely common and prevalent yet misunderstood and stigmatized disorder. Often dubbed “the invisible disability”, individuals living with FASD often struggle to feel understood and achieve a sense of belonging. Living with and supporting individuals with FASD often requires a level of patience and respect that can be difficult to achieve without some level of knowledge.
This workshop aims to combine up-to-date research with interactive activities to aid participants in beginning to fit together the puzzle pieces and begin to understand the individual they support. Participants will be asked to give real thought to a variety of questions designed to create empathy through understanding and knowledge.
Workshop Features & Objectives
- Develop a greater understanding of how FASD affects an individual both physiologically and psychologically.
- Using this understanding to generate empathy for the individual and their situation.
- Breakdown the stigmas often associated with FASD.
- Provide guidance and support strategies based on a combination of real-world examples and clinical knowledge.
- Recognize the value of looking past an individual’s diagnosis and building a relationship with the person underneath.
